So, with this New Year brings the start of another new Whole Hog Project, one that has been in the planning since the summer. We will be producing a new play that looks at Swindon in the 1950’s and more specifically the repertory theatre company that were once housed at the Mechanics Institute in Swindon’s railway village.
‘Private Widdle’s Rep’ also attempts to portray the early life of a well know British Comedy star known to millions through the ‘Carry On’ films. Charles Hawtrey worked at the Swindon Rep early in his career and although not a great deal is known about his time in the town, the play takes a fictious view behind the scenes and attempts to get to the bottom of this fascinating personality who, although popular with the public for his performances, had many ‘demons’ that went onto plague his life and later on his career.
Due to its link to Swindon history the play is being staged at the STEAM Museum with its close proximity to the Mechanics Institute. The Great Western Hall @ STEAM isn’t strictly a theatre space but will be a thrilling ‘site specific’ venue for the play to unfold in and create a great atmosphere for our 1950’s Playhouse.
Private Widdle’s Rep’ is part of the Madam Renards Mini Fringe Festival that is being held for the third year running. This unique festival is Swindon’s version of the Edinburgh Fringe (all be it on a smaller scale!) but with as much energy, talent and passion as its Scottish counterpart. A diversity of arts performances will take place across various venues in the town from 7th-14th April.
Private Widdle’s Rep’ receives its world premiere on 8th April.
(An older actor is still needed to play a role in the play. Playing range must be 50+. If anybody is interested just contact us through he website or our Facebook page)
